Know Justice, Know Peace (2024 Compilation)

It feels like we just did this — but the goodly folks at Food Desert Recordings are at it yet again.

Released TODAY, Know Justice, Know Peace is a brand new compilation benefitting National Bail Out.

Various Artists – Know Justice, Know Peace: A Compilation in Support of National Bail Out (Food Desert Recordings, 26 April 2024)

From Food Desert Recordings‘ Bandcamp page:

The National Bail Out is a Black-led and Black-centered collective of abolitionist organizers, lawyers, and activists building a community-based movement to support our folks in abolishing pretrial detention systems and dismantling the prison industrial complex. They are people who have been impacted by cages — either by being in them themselves or witnessing their families and loved ones be encaged. They are queer, trans, young, elder, and immigrant.

The collective coordinates the Mama’s Day Bail Outs, where they bail out as many Black Mamas and caregivers as we can so they can spend Mother’s Day with their families where they belong! They provide fellowship and employment opportunities for those they bail out to support their growth and create a national community of leaders who have experienced incarceration. They also work with groups across the country to support ongoing bail reform efforts and create resources for organizers and advocates interested in ending pretrial detention.

To find out more about National Bail Out, please visit www.nationalbailout.org. All proceeds from this album will be donated to National Bail Out every month to help them achieve their mission. As always, thank you for your generosity and support.

THROUGH MISTS - Prolific (EP Premiere)

Written by: The Administrator

A quick stroll through the archives will indicate that we slumbering and ink-splattered scribes are no strangers to hosting a good ol' Through Mists premiere. Back in 2022 we dropped a couple if 'em back-to-back, writing about the both the overtly referential "Awaken The Sleeping Village" and the epic bird-centric concept album "Mindless Automations." Since then, Through Mists has proven prolific to an intimidating degree, releasing a frankly astounding six(!) albums in 2023. Of these, I was a particular fan of Starkiller, which embraced an aggressive yet proggy sonic palette and a distinctly mythical lyrical direction. Perhaps the best album from the project to date, in my opinion.

Time moves on, and the Through Mists machine churns ever onward, albeit with a slightly longer timeframe separating the old and new material. And so here we are, with a new Through Mists release on the cusp of official droppage. The appropriately entitled Prolific--a four track EP--will be available tomorrow, April 25th. In the hours preceding, we are honored to host a premiere of the EP in full here in our less-than hallowed halls. Give it a listen below! As always, we'll meet ye on the other side to discuss.

A general statement: I really enjoy how weird Through Mists is, referring both to this EP and the extensive back catalog at large. Although I have come to expect a certain blackened death lurch with progressive composition, the four tracks herein represent a chaotic approach to genre blending that I find quite appealing. There's an emphasis on unhinged cleans here, whispering or sneering and even oddly electronic at times, like unto a digital voice from beyond a cosmic tear. When it comes to harsher implementation, the vocal inflections are numerous and chaotic, with the pinched and bird-like screech employed to exceptional and lengthy effect on the titular closer being my favorite. Check out "In Shattered Mirrors" to witness said vocal extremity on full display. Meanwhile, the guitar never sleeps--leads squeal and squabble, leaving a seemingly central riff to meander, pulling the tracks in unexpected and dynamic directions. Take the third track, "Golden Goddess," as a prime example of a demonstrated willingness to throw caution to the wind and just let the track go where it goes. As a result, focused and repeat listening is rewarded.

The aforementioned title track is by far the longest, clocking in at an impressive 14 minutes. It's a true statement piece, and executes the Through Mists formula exceptionally well, leading the listener through an unpredictable series of aesthetic arenas. A riff department that delivers churning groove? Check? Menacing whispers over gothic tinged and somewhat morose passages? Check. A tumbling and buffeting chaotic aggression, accentuated by rolling drums and whirlwind riffs? Check. A borderline breakdown on the tail end? Check. It's all here. It's a killer track, and I'm excited to see Through Mists working with the long form.

Overall, Prolific represents another strong entry into an extensive body of work. The corpus grows, and while it will undoubtedly be a very short time until another project emerges from the Through Mists camp, these four tracks hold their own in the here and now. And before we tie this one up with a bow, here's a statement from the artist: "Through Mists is very happy to share Prolific with the world! This has been a change of pace for the writing and production of this EP, and we feel it lays the groundwork for future music! Prolific is a culmination of experiences, both good and bad, turned into something to unleash on the world!

Through Mists - Prolific will be released April 25th, 2024. Find it on bandcamp here. The physical release on cassette can be found here.

Developing An Inclusive Mindset

I don’t really give conference talks anymore, but I had this idea bouncing around my head for a while which I thought would make a good one. So I recorded it as though I was giving a talk.

The idea is around how to develop An Inclusive Mindset as it relates to product design. How to build software which is comfortably useful to as wide a spectrum of your users as possible. I then illustrate this with a variety of concrete examples from my work building Pedometer++.

MEGAFAUNA - Venator (Album Premiere)

Written by: The Administrator

Those of you with an uncanny memory may recall that, towards the end of my recent review of Megafauna's eerie and excellent Venator, I made mention of a premiere. Here we are, folks. Venator will officially be released this Friday, April 19th, via Syrup Moose Records, but if you're unwilling to wait, we invite you to listen to it in full below.

Of course, some preparation is called for If you're invested in full experience, I highly recommend hiking into the deepest darkest forest you can reasonably find. Walk until you find a dilapidated shack, or perhaps a large pile of bones that look suspiciously familiar. Set up camp. Wait for dark, and then wait for your flashlight battery to die. Make peace with the fact that there is almost certainly something in the woods, and i̵̲̾͑̏t̷̜̝̳̏ ̸̼͝i̴͉̥̲̗͋̊s̵̨̬̹͙͓͕̿̈̉̔̌͠ ̵̡̭̜̩͌̈́̽͛̌̚ͅͅw̶̧̹̮̯̌̈ą̴̹̼̮̼̖́̆̑͆̓͝t̵̨̨͇̺̂̇̇̅͆̋͜͠c̶̢̧̻̞̈́̓͝ḥ̶̢͐̉̄̓̓̋i̷̦͈̠̎̇̊͂̔͠n̵̼͛g̴̨̮͉̲̠͆.

Check out Venator below, and, as always, we'll meet you on the other side. Much to the chagrin of pretty much everyone, I'm not done waxing poetic just yet.

As I've continued to listen and sink into this album, I've continued to enjoy the oddities and nuances that make each track feel distinct. The album feels cohesive, but every next track feels as much of a  standalone as it does a part of a larger puzzle. For example, I'm increasingly fascinated with the weird sounds and downright uncomfortable aura on "Beneath The Gallows," which has me fully convinced that Megafauna should be first in line to soundtrack the next Skinamarink knockoff. In all of its cascading plunkiness and humming atmosphere, this track reminds me of early 90's terror in a way I really can't put into words. It shares a clear sense of anxiety with, say, followup  "F E A R A N D E X H A U S T I O N," but that same emotion is realized in a very different way. Less foreboding, more menacing. Take any random track and contrast it with another, and despite the intrinsic sonic and aesthetic differences, the fact that they come from the same project feels exceedingly apparent. In other words, the unsettling vibe abides. And that, I hasten to add, is a very good thing.

The use of vocal samples throughout is also something that I've come to appreciate more and more over repeat listens--they serve as a loose narrative frame that helps contextualize emotive cacophony. It's a smart tool, and the album benefits from the structure, imagined or otherwise.

As we wind down towards an eventual conclusion, this statement from the artist helps contextualize the whole affair: Ventator is "an album created in various stages of exhaustion, mental illness, bursts of creativity, fear, anger, sadness, joy, nihilism and limited free time. The second effort from MEGAFAUNA and an outlet and means of processing of some long dormant feelings, or feelings thought exorcised. Maybe it shouldn't exist, but it does. Maybe I shouldn't, but I do."

And there you have it! After spending significant time with Venator, I sincerely hope you enjoy/fear/connect with this album as much as I have.

Y’all. It’s been a minute. What’s shakin’?

Our favorite Maryland-based non-profit charity record label recently dropped the latest in their series of benefit compilations, and I wanted to make sure you hadn’t missed out on this one.

Primarily consisting of dungeon synth and other closely-related (mostly) instrumental, (almost exclusively) synth-based sounds, Free Me from This Dungeon is on sale now with proceeds supporting the Safelight organization.

Various Artists – Free Me from This Dungeon: A Compilation in Support of the Safelight Organization (Food Desert Recordings, 23 February 2024)

From Food Desert Recordings‘ Bandcamp page:

Safelight is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that provides support for survivors of interpersonal violence, sexual assault, and child abuse. They make it possible for families who want to be free of violent relationships to succeed. They make hope real.

Safelight gives individuals who have experienced interpersonal violence, sexual abuse, and child abuse a real second chance—an opportunity to redesign and better their lives. Today, due to Safelight‘s broad community support and partners, they are addressing needs in mental health, substance abuse, employment and housing. They provide not only immediate short-term help to children and adults in crisis but help them work towards long-term solutions.

To find out more about Safelight‘s mission, please go to www.safelightfamily.org. All proceeds from this album will be donated to the Safelight organization every month to help them achieve their mission. As always, thank you for your generosity and support.

There’s Something Fishy About My Yard

We had quite a bit of weather earlier in the week (nor are we out of it, although Eclipse Day looks to be all right if the predictions hold) and as a result our yard flooded and we had a river running through it. Which is all right! In fact our yard is designed to channel overflow from a neighbor’s pond down our yard and toward a creek on the other side of the road from us. It happens a few times a year and, once the rain stops, it drains fairly quickly and efficiently.

And as a side effect, every now and again, when things dry up a bit, I find these: stranded bluegills in my yard. They are dead, alas for them, and today as I was walking Charlie, I found rather a few of them: at least a dozen, all near the treeline. Because I don’t want the dog to eat them whole, or the cats to drag their carcasses into the garage, I was obliged to chuck all that I found into the treeline, which was every bit as icky as it sounds. I hope not to do that again for a good long time. Also, one really does never get used to random fish in the yard.

So, that’s my Friday so far. How are you?

— JS
